Filming a Music Video at the Boti Waterfalls in Ghana

Many big Hollywood movies and popular TV shows have been shot in Ghana, including Beast of No Nation, Deadly Voyage, Black Earth Rising and Holly City’s Tuesday Child. The main reason that filmmakers and producers choose Ghana is because of the incredibly varied nature and good infrastructure in the West African Terrain.

Most of the filming locations are easily accessible for visitors of Ghana, including the popular Boti Waterfalls. The Waterfall located in the Eastern Region is popular with music videos and filmmakers. Recently my team had the opportunity to shoot a music video at the beautiful location.

Have outlined some tips and  the experience we had whilst filming there and the journey to the location.

Driving from Accra to the location took us around 3 hours max with a few stops at local restaurants for quick bites. The roads were a bit bumpy and dusty after our first 2 hours into the journey.  This was due to the current road construction to the site which in coming years will make it very easily accessible.

On arrival the location had assistance and staff around to help us move out lighting and camera gear to the main site. Which was about 10mins from the main entrance. There’s a long stairs to the site which can take you about 5 minutes to descend and you can imagine the trip when coming back up after visiting the site. Prepare yourself for some exercise and wear hood footwear for the long walk.

Requirements and fees to film at the Boti Waterfalls are simple, you will need to get permission to be allowed to film the Boti Waterfalls. In most cases permission to film is arranged on the local level, often on the same day and fees can be paid on arrival. Allow extra location fees if need be. The current fee for filming was 3000 Ghana Cedis and depending on the size of the crew an admission fee of 50 Ghana cedis is required from each member.

Shooting there was quite fun and the  weather at the location was a bit chilly and few rains here and there. The team spent about 2 hours filming the music video, I have added some behind the scenes pictures to the post. If you planning to film there or have any queries you can drop me a message on kreative5wa@outlook.com
